Establishment of Great Smoky Mountains National Park

15 June 1934

Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border of Tennessee and North Carolina in the southern Appalachians. It was established in 1934 after a campaign that raised money and bought land from thousands of private owners, with a large donation from the Rockefeller family, and it was formally dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1940. The park protects extensive old-growth forest and remarkable biodiversity, and it is among the most visited national parks in the United States. Its name comes from the bluish haze that often hangs over the ridges. The Cherokee lived in the region for centuries, and the creation of the park required the removal of many mountain families who had settled there.
