Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran

from 25 August 1941 to 17 September 1941

In the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran, British and Soviet forces occupied the neutral country to secure its oil fields and a supply route to the Soviet Union, and to remove German influence. The Soviets advanced from the north and the British from the south and west. Iran's army resisted briefly but was overwhelmed within about three weeks. Reza Shah was forced to abdicate in favor of his young son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The Allied occupation lasted until 1946, and the supply route, called the Persian Corridor, carried millions of tons of aid to the Soviet Union. In 1943 Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met in Tehran. The Soviet refusal to withdraw from northern Iran in 1946 led to one of the first crises of the Cold War.
