AirAsia Flight 8501

28 December 2014

Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 was a scheduled passenger flight from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore, operated by an Airbus A320. It disappeared from radar while crossing a region of thunderstorms over the Java Sea, and the wreckage was found a few days later. All 162 people on board were killed. Investigators found that a recurring fault in a rudder control system had been followed by the crew's attempt to deal with the problem, in the course of which the autopilot disengaged, and the aircraft entered an aerodynamic stall from which the pilots did not recover. The accident led to recommendations on pilot training in handling a stall and on the maintenance of the faulty component.
