The concrete canopy at the entrance of the railway station in Novi Sad, Serbia's second-largest city, collapsed on the afternoon of 1 November 2024, killing sixteen people. The station building had been renovated and reopened only a few months earlier, as part of the rail line between Belgrade and Budapest that was being upgraded with Chinese contractors. The disaster led to mass protests across Serbia, led by university students, who accused the authorities of corruption and negligence and demanded transparency and accountability. Prime Minister Miloš Vučević resigned in January 2025, and large demonstrations continued for months. Prosecutors opened a criminal investigation, and the cause of the collapse and responsibility for it became a central political issue.
