2024 Spain floods

29 October 2024

Torrential rain from a cut-off low-pressure system, known in Spain as a DANA, caused catastrophic flash floods in the province of Valencia and neighboring areas. Some towns received in a few hours about as much rain as they normally get in a year, and ravines such as the Poyo turned into torrents that swept through suburbs south of the city of Valencia. More than two hundred people died, making it Spain's deadliest flood in decades. Cars, underground car parks and ground floors were overwhelmed, and roads and railways were cut for weeks. The disaster led to heavy criticism of how and when warnings reached the public, to a long judicial inquiry, and to a national debate about flood planning in a warming climate.
