2024 Noto earthquake

1 January 2024

The 2024 Noto earthquake was a powerful earthquake of magnitude about 7.5 that struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on the western coast of Japan, on New Year's Day. It followed a series of smaller tremors over the previous years and was felt across much of the country. The shaking collapsed many houses and damaged roads and ports, and a tsunami struck the coast of the Sea of Japan. A large fire destroyed part of the historic morning market in Wajima. The quake killed several hundred people when later deaths from health problems and living conditions are included, and recovery was slow because the peninsula is remote and many residents were elderly.
