The 2024 Taiwanese presidential election was won by Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party, who defeated Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang and Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People's Party with around 40 percent of the vote. It was the first time that a single party won three consecutive presidential elections since the first direct vote in 1996. The campaign focused on relations with China, which claims Taiwan, and on economic issues such as housing and wages, and Beijing warned against voting for Lai, whom it regarded as a separatist. Legislative elections held on the same day left the DPP without a majority, since the Kuomintang became the largest party and the TPP held the balance of power.
