The 2023 Chinese balloon incident was a diplomatic episode in which a large Chinese high-altitude balloon crossed Canadian and United States airspace, drifting over sensitive military sites in Montana before it was shot down by a missile fired by a US fighter jet over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of South Carolina. The Chinese government said it was a civilian weather research airship that had been blown off course, while American officials said it was a surveillance balloon. The affair led the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, to postpone a planned visit to Beijing, and it intensified political debate in the United States about the response and about relations with China.
