The 2022 French presidential election was held in two rounds, in April, to choose the president of France for a five-year term. The incumbent, Emmanuel Macron, who ran for his second term, faced the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in a run-off, as in 2017, after finishing first in the opening round. Other first-round candidates included Jean-Luc Melenchon of the left, who came third, Eric Zemmour on the far right, and Valerie Pecresse of the traditional right, who did poorly. Macron won the second round with about 58 percent of the vote. He became the first French president in two decades to win re-election, but his party then lost its majority in the legislative elections.
