Bucha is a town northwest of Kyiv that was occupied by Russian forces in the first weeks of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. After the Russian troops withdrew from the Kyiv region at the end of March 2022, journalists and Ukrainian authorities found the bodies of civilians in streets, yards and a mass grave, many of whom had been shot, some with their hands bound. Ukrainian prosecutors and international investigators documented hundreds of deaths in the town. Images of the dead caused international outrage and led to new sanctions on Russia and to calls for war crimes prosecutions, while the Russian government denied responsibility. The International Criminal Court and prosecutors in Ukraine and several other countries have since investigated the killings.
