Discovery of Kerberos

28 June 2011

Kerberos is a small moon of Pluto, discovered on 28 June 2011 in images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope by a team led by Mark Showalter, and announced the following month. It was the fourth moon of Pluto to be discovered, after Charon, Nix and Hydra, and it orbits between the orbits of Nix and Hydra. It is only a few kilometers across. When the New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto in 2015, it showed that Kerberos is a double-lobed object that is unexpectedly bright, with a surface that is probably water ice. It is named after Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to the underworld in Greek and Roman myth.
