The 2009 European Parliament election was the seventh direct election of the European Parliament, held across the member states of the European Union over several days in June. Voters chose 736 members, in a vote that took place during the global financial crisis. The centre-right European People's Party remained the largest group, and the Socialists came second, while the Greens and some eurosceptic and far-right parties did well in a number of countries. Turnout was low, at a little over 40 percent, which was the lowest in the history of European elections. The new Parliament approved José Manuel Barroso for a second term as President of the European Commission.
