1984 United States presidential election

6 November 1984

The 1984 United States presidential election was won in a landslide by the incumbent Republican president, Ronald Reagan, who defeated the Democratic nominee, former Vice President Walter Mondale. Reagan campaigned on a recovering economy, falling inflation and a message of renewed national optimism, summarised in the television advertisement Morning in America. Mondale chose Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate, the first woman on a major party's national ticket, but he struggled to overcome Reagan's popularity and criticism of his promise to raise taxes. Reagan carried forty-nine of the fifty states, losing only Minnesota, Mondale's home state, and the District of Columbia, in one of the most lopsided results in American history.
