WWI Eastern Front

from 17 August 1914 to 3 March 1918

The Eastern Front of the First World War stretched across a vast area from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, where Russia fought Germany and Austria-Hungary. It was more fluid than the Western Front. Russia's early invasion of East Prussia ended in a German victory at Tannenberg, while its armies did better against Austria-Hungary in Galicia. In 1915 German and Austrian forces broke through at Gorlice-Tarnow and pushed the Russians back, and the Brusilov Offensive in 1916 was a major Russian success. Heavy losses and shortages contributed to the revolutions of 1917, and the new Bolshevik government left the war with the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
