Expedition Endurance

from 8 August 1914 to 1 January 1917

The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, usually called the Endurance expedition after its ship, was led by Ernest Shackleton and aimed to cross Antarctica from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea via the South Pole. The Endurance became trapped in pack ice in early 1915 and was crushed and sank in November of that year, leaving twenty-eight men camped on the ice. They dragged and sailed their lifeboats to uninhabited Elephant Island in April 1916. Shackleton and five companions then sailed about eight hundred nautical miles in the lifeboat James Caird to South Georgia and crossed its mountains on foot to a whaling station. Shackleton returned with a Chilean tug and rescued all the men left on Elephant Island. The wreck of the Endurance was found in 2022, remarkably preserved, at a depth of about three thousand meters.
