Founding of Goethe University Frankfurt

16 October 1914

Goethe University Frankfurt was founded in 1914 as a foundation university, a distinctive arrangement in Germany, in that it was financed largely by the donations of the citizens of Frankfurt, among them many wealthy merchants and bankers, including a significant number of Jewish benefactors, rather than by the state. It was meant to be a modern institution with a strong focus on the social sciences and economics. In 1932 it was named after the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was born in the city. The university was the home of the Frankfurt School of critical theory, with thinkers such as Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer. After the Nazis came to power, many of its Jewish professors were dismissed. It is today one of the largest universities in Germany.
