The War of the First Coalition was the first large effort by European monarchies to defeat Revolutionary France. It began when France declared war on Austria, and Prussia joined Austria, while the French victory at Valmy in the autumn of 1792 halted the invasion. After the execution of Louis XVI, Britain, Spain, the Dutch Republic and others joined the coalition. France responded with mass conscription, the levee en masse, and gradually won the upper hand. In 1796 and 1797, a young general, Napoleon Bonaparte, defeated the Austrians in northern Italy, which forced Austria to make peace at Campo Formio, leaving Britain the main opponent of France.
