Pius IX was born on 13 May 1792 in Senigallia. Born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti, he was pope for more than thirty-one years, the longest reign in history of any pope after St Peter according to the traditional lists. Elected as a liberal reformer, he turned conservative after the revolutions of 1848, and lost the Papal States to Italian unification, ending in the capture of Rome in 1870 and his withdrawal into the Vatican. He proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854, issued the Syllabus of Errors, and convened the First Vatican Council, which declared papal infallibility. He was beatified in 2000.
