Gioachino Rossini was born on 29 February 1792 in Pesaro. An Italian composer, Rossini was the leading opera composer of his time, famous for comic operas such as The Barber of Seville, La Cenerentola and The Italian Girl in Algiers, as well as serious ones like Tancredi and William Tell. His melodies, sparkling orchestration and the so-called Rossini crescendo gave his works great energy. After William Tell, in 1829, he stopped composing operas at the age of thirty-seven, living in Bologna and Paris. His later works included the Stabat Mater and the Petite messe solennelle. He was also known as a gourmet, and the dish Tournedos Rossini is named after him.
