The French Revolutionary Wars were a series of conflicts between revolutionary France and a shifting group of European monarchies, beginning when France declared war on Austria in April 1792. The monarchies feared the spread of revolution, while many French leaders believed war would defend and spread it. After early setbacks, the French citizen army won the battle of Valmy and conquered the Austrian Netherlands, leading to the First Coalition against France. The young general Napoleon Bonaparte rose to fame in the Italian campaigns and in Egypt, and later took power in France. The wars were paused by the Treaty of Amiens in 1802, and gave way to the Napoleonic Wars.
