Yizhak Rabin was born on 1 March 1922 in Jerusalem. An Israeli soldier and statesman, Rabin was chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces during the Six-Day War in 1967 and later served as ambassador to the United States, defense minister and twice as prime minister. In his second term, from 1992, he negotiated the Oslo Accords with the Palestine Liberation Organization and signed a peace treaty with Jordan. He shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 with Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat. He was assassinated at a peace rally in Tel Aviv by Yigal Amir, a right-wing Israeli opposed to the peace process.
