The Lumiere brothers hold the first public film screening

28 December 1895

On 28 December 1895, in the Salon Indien of the Grand Cafe on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris, Auguste and Louis Lumiere showed ten short films of about 50 seconds each to a paying audience of 33 people. They included 'Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory' and 'The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat', which according to legend made the audience duck for fear of the train. Their Cinematographe, which combined camera, projector and printer in one light box, was more practical than Edison's Kinetoscope, which was for one viewer. Within a year, films were shown in cities worldwide.
