Founding of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo

15 November 1895

Clube de Regatas do Flamengo is a sports club in Rio de Janeiro, founded as a rowing club in the 1890s, with a football section added in the early 20th century after a group of dissident players left Fluminense. It is the most widely supported club in Brazil, nicknamed Mengão, and plays in red and black. Led by Zico, it won the Copa Libertadores in 1981 and then the Intercontinental Cup by beating Liverpool 3–0 in Tokyo. It won the Libertadores again in 2019 and 2022 and has won the Brazilian league several times. Home matches are played at the Maracanã. In 2019 a fire at the club's youth training center killed ten young players, a tragedy that shocked the country.
