The Philippine Revolution was an armed uprising against Spanish colonial rule, led at first by the secret society known as the Katipunan, founded by Andres Bonifacio. It broke out in August 1896 after the Spanish authorities discovered the society, and spread from Manila to nearby provinces. Emilio Aguinaldo emerged as the leading figure, and he took over the movement after Bonifacio was executed by rival revolutionaries. A truce, the Pact of Biak-na-Bato, ended the first phase. The Spanish-American War brought the fighting back, and Aguinaldo declared independence in June 1898, but Spain handed the islands to the United States under the Treaty of Paris, leading to the Philippine-American War.
