In December 1995 the Hubble Space Telescope pointed at an apparently empty patch of sky near the Big Dipper, about the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length, and exposed for 10 days. The image revealed around 3,000 galaxies, many of them very young and far away, some seen as they were over 12 billion years ago. It showed that the universe is filled with galaxies in every direction and changed ideas about how they grew. Later deep fields reached even farther, and the James Webb Space Telescope did so again in 2022.
