Creation of Visual Basic Script

1996

VBScript, short for Visual Basic Scripting Edition, is a lightweight scripting language developed by Microsoft and derived from Visual Basic. It was first released in 1996 with Internet Explorer 3 as an alternative to JavaScript for web pages, but its use in browsers stayed small because other browsers did not support it. It found a larger role in Windows, where Windows Script Host ran it for administrative scripts and Active Server Pages used it on web servers. It was also widely used for automation in Microsoft Office and was exploited in email viruses such as the ILOVEYOU worm. Microsoft later announced that it would be phased out of Windows.
