Creation of JavaScript

4 December 1995

JavaScript was created at the browser company Netscape by Brendan Eich, who wrote the first version in about ten days in 1995. It was first called Mocha, then LiveScript, and was renamed JavaScript when Netscape and Sun Microsystems announced it in December 1995, as a marketing link to the popular Java language, although the two languages are quite different. It allowed web pages to respond to users, check forms and change content without reloading. Microsoft produced its own version, and the language was standardised as ECMAScript by Ecma International in 1997. After Node.js made it possible to run it on servers in 2009, JavaScript became one of the most widely used programming languages in the world.
