In July 1995, during the Bosnian War, Bosnian Serb forces under General Ratko Mladić overran the town of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, a United Nations safe area defended only by lightly armed Dutch peacekeepers. Over the following days more than eight thousand Bosniak men and boys were systematically killed, while tens of thousands of women, children and elderly people were expelled. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice both ruled that these killings amounted to genocide. Mladić and the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić were later convicted, and the memorial and cemetery at Potočari now hold the identified victims, whose remains are still being recovered from mass graves.
