Creation of PHP

8 June 1995

PHP is a scripting language designed for web development, created by the Danish-Canadian programmer Rasmus Lerdorf, who announced a set of tools called Personal Home Page Tools on a Usenet newsgroup. The tools began as simple programs for tracking visitors to his online resume. The language was rewritten in 1997 and 1998 by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, becoming PHP 3, and its name was changed to a recursive acronym, PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. Its ease of use, free availability and ability to embed code in web pages made it hugely popular, and it powers a large share of websites, including the WordPress content management system. It is often criticised for its inconsistent design, which has improved in recent versions.
