The 2024 Russian presidential election was held over three days in March and resulted in a fifth term for Vladimir Putin, who won with about 87 percent of the vote according to official figures, the largest share in post-Soviet Russian history. The opposition leader Alexei Navalny had died in prison a month earlier, and other critics of the war in Ukraine, such as Boris Nadezhdin, were barred from the ballot. The other candidates, from parliamentary parties, were seen as having no chance. Independent observers and Western governments criticised the vote as neither free nor fair, and voting also took place in occupied parts of Ukraine, which Ukraine and its allies condemned.
