The Pacific War was the part of the Second World War fought between Japan and the Allies in the Pacific and East Asia. It opened with the surprise Japanese attack on the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, along with simultaneous assaults on the Philippines, Hong Kong and Malaya. Japan conquered much of Southeast Asia in months, but the American naval victory at Midway in 1942 turned the tide. The Allies advanced across the islands in a campaign of hard-fought battles such as Guadalcanal, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet entry into the war, Japan surrendered, and the formal surrender was signed in Tokyo Bay.
