Second Boer War

from 11 October 1899 to 31 May 1902

The Second Boer War was fought in southern Africa between the United Kingdom and the two Boer republics, the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. Tensions had grown over British influence after gold was found on the Witwatersrand, the rights of foreign workers and the Jameson Raid. The Boers won early victories and besieged Ladysmith, Kimberley and Mafeking, but British reinforcements turned the tide and captured the main towns. The Boers then waged a guerrilla war, which the British countered with scorched-earth tactics and concentration camps in which many Boer civilians and black Africans died of disease. The Treaty of Vereeniging ended the war and the territories were absorbed into the Union of South Africa in 1910.
