Alfred Hitchcock was born on 13 August 1899 in Leytonstone. A British film director and producer, Hitchcock began in the silent era in London and made The Lodger and Blackmail before moving to Hollywood in 1939. Known as the Master of Suspense, he directed Rebecca, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho and The Birds. His films are known for their elaborate camera work, themes of guilt and voyeurism, and cameo appearances by the director himself. He also hosted a television series, Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Although nominated several times, he never won an Oscar for directing, and he was knighted shortly before his death.
