Founding of Olympique de Marseille

31 August 1899

Olympique de Marseille is a French football club from the port city of Marseille, founded by Rene Dufaure de Lajarte, and is one of the best-supported clubs in France, with a passionate fan base in the Stade Velodrome. It was the first French club to win the European Cup, in 1993, beating AC Milan in the final in Munich with a goal from Basile Boli, in the Champions League era. The title was later overshadowed by a match-fixing scandal in the domestic league, which led to the club's relegation and the loss of its French title that year. The club has won the French league nine times, and its great rivalry with Paris Saint-Germain is known as Le Classique.
