On 24 May 2022 an eighteen-year-old gunman killed nineteen children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, using a semi-automatic rifle that he had bought legally shortly after his birthday. Hundreds of law enforcement officers came to the scene, but they waited in a hallway for more than an hour before a tactical team entered the classroom and killed the gunman. Investigations by Texas lawmakers and the federal Department of Justice found serious failures of leadership, communication and training. The school district's police chief was dismissed, and the school was later demolished. The shooting renewed the national debate on gun control and led to a bipartisan federal gun safety law.
