Rise of Pirate Party

2006

The Pirate Party is a type of political party that focuses on issues such as reform of copyright and patent law, freedom of information, privacy and civil liberties on the internet. The first Pirate Party was founded in Sweden in 2006 by Rick Falkvinge, after a police raid on the file-sharing site The Pirate Bay, and parties in other countries soon followed. The Swedish party won two seats in the European Parliament in 2009, and in Germany the party won seats in several regional parliaments in 2011 and 2012. Pirate Parties International was set up in 2010 to link the national parties. The Icelandic Pirate Party won a substantial share of the vote in the 2016 elections.
