Event Horizon Telescope

2006

The Event Horizon Telescope is an international collaboration that links radio telescopes around the world, using a technique called very-long-baseline interferometry, to create a virtual telescope as large as the Earth. Its aim is to produce images of the immediate surroundings of supermassive black holes, which requires extremely sharp resolution. The network includes observatories such as ALMA in Chile, the IRAM telescope in Spain, the South Pole Telescope and the Submillimeter Array in Hawaii. In 2019 it published the first direct image of a black hole's shadow, in the galaxy Messier 87, and in 2022 it released an image of Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way.
