Discovery of S/2006 S 1

4 January 2006

S/2006 S 1 is a small irregular moon of Saturn, found during observations of the planet by a team led by Scott Sheppard and David Jewitt. Like many outer moons of Saturn it is thought to be a captured body that orbits far from the planet in the opposite direction to Saturn's rotation, and it is only a few kilometres across. It was announced with a provisional designation, and its orbit has since been refined by follow-up observations. Because little other information is available, few other details of the moon are firmly established.
