Rise of Palestinian Islamic Jihad

October 1981

Palestinian Islamic Jihad is a Palestinian Islamist militant organization that emerged in the Gaza Strip in the early 1980s, founded by Fathi Shaqaqi and other Palestinian activists who had been influenced by the Iranian revolution and by the Muslim Brotherhood but who rejected the Brotherhood's approach as too passive. The group seeks the destruction of Israel and the creation of an Islamic Palestinian state, and it has carried out suicide bombings, rocket attacks and other violence against Israelis. It receives support from Iran and is smaller than Hamas, with which it has had a complicated relationship, sometimes cooperating and sometimes competing. It has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and other states.
