Death of Anwar Sadat

6 October 1981

Anwar Sadat died on 6 October 1981 in Cairo, aged 62. An Egyptian army officer and statesman, Sadat took part in the revolution of 1952 alongside Gamal Abdel Nasser and succeeded him as president. He launched the surprise attack on Israeli forces in 1973 and then made a historic visit to Jerusalem in 1977, which led to the Camp David Accords and a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. He shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin. The agreement isolated Egypt in much of the Arab world and angered Islamist militants, and he was assassinated by members of his own army during a military parade in Cairo.
