Rise of House of Bernadotte

1818

The House of Bernadotte is the royal house of Sweden, which has reigned since the early nineteenth century. Its founder, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, was a French marshal who served under Napoleon and was elected heir to the childless Swedish king in 1810. He adopted the name Charles John and became King Charles XIV John in 1818. Under his rule Sweden joined the coalition against Napoleon and, in 1814, gained Norway in a union that lasted until 1905. The dynasty has presided over Sweden's transformation into a modern parliamentary democracy and a stable state. The present king, Carl XVI Gustaf, is a descendant.
