Founding of University of Michigan

26 August 1817

The University of Michigan is a public research university in Ann Arbor and one of the leading universities in the United States. It was founded in Detroit before Michigan became a state, under the unusual name of Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, and it moved to Ann Arbor two decades later. The university grew into a large research institution with strong programmes in engineering, medicine, law, business and the sciences. It was among the first American universities to admit women, and its campus has long been associated with political and social activism, including the first teach-in against the Vietnam War. It is also known for its athletics, notably the Michigan Wolverines football team, which plays in one of the largest stadiums in the world.
