Theodor Mommsen was born on 30 November 1817 in Garding. A German historian and classical scholar, Mommsen is best known for his multivolume History of Rome, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902. He also helped create the monumental Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, a collection of Latin inscriptions, and wrote major works on Roman law and constitutional history, which shaped the field for generations. A liberal politician, he sat in the Prussian and German parliaments and opposed Bismarck and antisemitism. His wide-ranging research, based on inscriptions, coins and legal texts as well as literary sources, gave Roman studies a firm documentary basis.
