The Chakri dynasty is the royal house that has ruled Thailand since 1782. Its founder was Chao Phraya Chakri, a general who took power after the reign of King Taksin ended in unrest, became King Rama I, and moved the capital across the river to Bangkok. Later rulers include Mongkut and Chulalongkorn, who modernized Siam and preserved its independence while neighboring countries were colonized. A coup in 1932 ended absolute monarchy and established a constitutional one. King Bhumibol Adulyadej reigned for seventy years and was the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history. His son Vajiralongkorn has been king as Rama X since 2016.
