Niccolò Paganini was born on 27 October 1782 in Genoa. An Italian violinist and composer, Paganini was the most celebrated violin virtuoso of the nineteenth century, famed for dazzling technique, including extreme speed, double stops and unusual effects, such as playing on a single string. His 24 Caprices for solo violin, and his violin concertos, set new standards, and influenced Liszt, Schumann and Brahms, who wrote variations on his themes. Rumors that his skill came from a pact with the devil were encouraged by his gaunt appearance and showmanship. He toured throughout Europe to great acclaim. Ill health in later years, and the loss of his voice, limited his activity.
