Martin Van Buren was born on 5 December 1782 in Kinderhook. The eighth President of the United States, Van Buren was a New York lawyer and political organizer, nicknamed the Little Magician for his skill, who helped build the Democratic Party. He served as senator, governor of New York, secretary of state and vice president under Andrew Jackson, whom he succeeded as president in 1837. His term was dominated by the Panic of 1837 and the long depression that followed, and he lost the 1840 election to William Henry Harrison. In 1848 he ran again as the candidate of the anti-slavery Free Soil Party. He was the first president born as a citizen of the United States rather than as a British subject.
