Sikh Empire

from 1799 to 1849

The Sikh Empire was a state in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent, centered on the Punjab, with Lahore as its capital. It emerged from the confederacy of Sikh misls and was founded by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who took Lahore in 1799 and went on to unite the Punjab and conquer Kashmir, Multan and Peshawar. He modernized his army with French and Italian officers, and his court was known for its tolerance of Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims. After his death in 1839, rivalries weakened the state, and two wars with the British East India Company followed. The second, ending in 1849, led to the annexation of the Punjab by the British.
