Release of arXiv

14 August 1991

ArXiv is an online repository of preprints, scientific papers shared before or alongside formal peer review. It was created by the physicist Paul Ginsparg at Los Alamos National Laboratory to let researchers in high-energy physics share their papers by email. The service quickly moved to the web and expanded to cover mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, statistics and many other fields. Cornell University took over its operation in the 2000s. Because anyone can read the papers for free and new work appears there within a day or two, arXiv changed how scientists communicate, and it is a model for open access publishing. Famous results, such as Grigori Perelman's proof of the Poincare conjecture, were first posted there.
