WordPress is a free and open-source content management system for building websites and blogs. It was released in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, who created it as a fork of an older blogging program called b2/cafelog. It is written in PHP, licensed under the GNU General Public License, and its look and features can be extended with themes and plugins. Over the years it grew from a blogging tool into a system used for all kinds of websites, from small personal sites to large news organizations. WordPress powers a very large share of all websites. The company Automattic, which Mullenweg founded, runs the hosted service WordPress.com.
