Creation of Windows Server 2003

24 April 2003

Windows Server 2003 was a version of Microsoft's server operating system line, released as the successor to Windows 2000 Server and built on the same code base as Windows XP. It put a strong emphasis on security under Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing initiative, and it included improvements to Active Directory, the web server Internet Information Services and file and print services. A later update, Windows Server 2003 R2, added further management features, and 64-bit editions were introduced a couple of years after the original release. The system was widely used in businesses and data centres for more than a decade. Microsoft ended extended support in 2015, which left many organizations facing a costly migration.
